Job Description

Salary: $105,612 - 142,020 per year Requirements:

  • We require one of the following pathways: a masters degree or higher in informatics, data science, mathematics, computer science, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related technical or quantitative field plus 1 year of data science or informatics experience in health care, public health, or behavioral health.
  • Alternatively, we accept a bachelors degree in one of those fields plus 3 years of data science or informatics experience in health care, public health, or behavioral health.
  • We will also consider 7 years of data science or informatics experience in health care, public health, or behavioral health.
  • Experience must include at least 1 year, or 3 years under the other pathways, working with complex analytics, data visualization software, and R, SAS, SQL, M code, and/or Python.
  • We expect strong analytical ability, with the capacity to gather, organize, interpret, and communicate large volumes of information accurately and with close attention to detail.
  • We need people who can take initiative to learn and grow.
  • We need people who can take action to meet the needs of others.
  • Preferred qualifications include knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding, and familiarity with health care business systems and prior authorization processes.
  • Preferred qualifications also include experience working effectively on multidisciplinary teams and comfort engaging with staff at all levels of the agency.
  • Strong workload management, prioritization, and project coordination skills are preferred.
  • We value excellent written and verbal communication skills, including visual storytelling through dashboards, reports, and data visualizations.
  • Advanced experience handling large, complex datasets and strong SQL, R, Python, SAS, and Power BI or Tableau skills are preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • We generate high-quality data products from structured and unstructured sources using R, SAS, SQL, M code, and/or Python.
  • We lead the design of advanced algorithms, data models, and automated processing workflows.
  • We create data quality processes and metrics to support accurate, timely reporting to CMS and the Washington State Legislature.
  • We lead multiple complex data science initiatives with internal and external partners.
  • We use and oversee R, Power BI, and/or Tableau to build models and interactive visualizations.
  • We ensure compliance with agency procedures and external policy or legal requirements while maintaining accuracy and completeness.
  • We set workload distribution strategies and help maintain a balanced assignment structure within the work unit.
  • We involve staff in decisions that affect their work and maintain a participatory team environment.
  • We mentor staff to strengthen their analytical skills, program knowledge, data infrastructure understanding, and best practices.
  • We define performance standards and objectives and identify implementation strategies.
  • We apply advanced quantitative research methods to analyze and interpret data.
  • We oversee statistical analysis to identify patterns, trends, and conclusions.
  • We serve as the primary technical data science expert for the prior authorization team.
  • We advise on data policy development and strategic recommendations.
  • We review proposal plans and implementation work for statistical methods such as regression, clustering, and time series analysis.
  • We coach junior and entry-level data scientists through review, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
  • We provide expert consultation on analytic barriers, opportunities, and innovation.
  • We gather, prioritize, and validate data requirements.
  • We advise agency leadership on data access, feasibility, and statistical validity.
  • We resolve complex technical issues using innovative methods.
  • We develop creative and effective approaches to address analytics requests.
  • We assess statistical tools and methods for feasibility, relevance, and effectiveness.
  • We troubleshoot highly complex issues quickly and minimize disruption to data transmission.
  • We define data logic, measures, and complex analytical structures.
  • We oversee data validity checks to identify and report anomalies.
  • We propose and lead technical solutions informed by health care system knowledge.
