What is a Government Affairs Representative?
The Government Affairs Representative provides logistical and administrative support for the company’s Government Affairs organization, including maintaining systems, processes, communications, and information needed to support the organization.
What does a Government Affairs Representative do?
»Monitors, tracks, researches, and reports on legislative issues for state government affairs initiatives through review of bill tracking mechanisms, legislative hearings and regulatory meetings, which includes internet research and reviewing news articles
»Prepares, edits, and reviews legislative updates for internal and external communications
»Maintains government affairs communications material and collateral in conjunction with Communications Department
»Assists in external meeting management, including developing and preparing materials and communications, sending invitations, coordinating logistics and other connected tasks
»Engages with and supports other organizations within the company, including Corporate Communications and Consumer Outreach, to ensure alignment of strategy and messaging
»Performs research needed to help file lobbying reports with significant agencies; helps ensure compliance with applicable rules
»Actively works with other internal departments to support and add value to key objectives through community and political outreach
»Builds strong relationships with external third parties that share common purpose and results with the corporation
»Identifies and stays up to date on key national, state, and local economic and financial trends that affect the organization
»Participates in external events and meetings, which could include meetings with elected officials and staff, as well as Central Hudson community outreach or corporate contribution events
»Provides political outreach support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be a Government Affairs Representative?
Required:
»Associate’s degree in political science, economics, communications, marketing, or a related field in Lieu of an Associate’s degree, a high school diploma or equivalent and 5+ years’ practice in a in a government and/or public affairs related position
»Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the capability to lgain new computer software programs quickly
»Strong planning, coordinating, scheduling and organizational expertise
»Strong working expertise of social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.)
»Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communications expertise
» capability to multitask and meet deadlines
»Occasional weekend and evening work as needed for community events
»Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
» expertise of and practice with New York State and/or federal energy policy matters
» practice in the regulated electric and/or gas utility industry
